So you downloaded the dating app of choice , uploaded a few dating profile photos and synced your Facebook, LinkedIn, Spotify and Instagram account to populate your location, hometown, age, height, favorite band, company name and title. Not so fast. About me sections of dating apps provide a creative outlet to write about yourself, observations about topics of the hour, ambitions, guilty pleasures, wittiness and obsessions.
They also help to reveal intentions by showing how much thought and effort you put into marketing yourself. Thin profiles and using synced data only will make it difficult for people to take you seriously. A mix of your personality, lifestyle and what you seek should be conveyed in a dating profile.
Bumble Bio Tip For Men, Women, About Me Section. Bios or About Me sections should fill in the holes that you can do so via prompts as seen in Bumble and Hinge. They should be succinct, insightful, anecdotal and complement your photos and photo captions. How you spend your time, what piques your interest and examples of your knowledge, experience, culture go a long way to separating yourself from the competition.
A bio should not read like a resume, it should complement your photos and not be a summary of your LinkedIn profile. Adding places lived, favorite TV show, and favorite dish are good starts, but you still need some dimension, life in your bios.
Similarly, a list of adjectives can be biased, possibly inaccurate and impossible to invalidate online. I call these characteristics empty adjectives. Many people have a hard time being honest about themselves just look at your co-workers LinkedIn profile.
Acting too coy or using joke prompts and answers lack vulnerability and can be seen as defensive behavior by others.
These are typically used on sites like Match. com, OkCupid and POF where they are separate from longer, detailed bios and about me sections. These profile headlines can be cute, fun and random — movie and tv quotes are good if done well.
Avoid obvious ones from shows like the Office. Dating App Profile Tips: Use Details, Anecdotes, References — Dating Profile Templates, Irresistible Dating Profile Examples. Cliche answers, bios are not only boring but often lack any insight.
Ask me anything, open to new adventures, liking Netflix or hiking is extremely vague. Dig into types of hikes with favorite types of trails i. A great bio should reveal anecdotal insights, passions, beliefs, curiosities, guilty pleasures, some embarrassing tidbits and priorities. Short examples that illustrate points are great. Taking a stand vs. trying to be the most agreeable or interesting man in the world is preferred. No one wants an exact clone of themselves. Be original, be you.
Nouns like hiker, traveler, foodie etc. offer no insight into frequency, prioritization or level of commitment. Are you a beach resort traveler or do you like to immerse yourself in culture and languages with locals different from yourself? Are you a superficial Instagram traveler or do you have some depth to your curiosity. Do you like safe chain restaurants, dives featured on No Reservations or posh Michelin rated restaurants.
Be careful about vague descriptions in your profile. The more vague, the less interesting you will sound. Most people never seek unbiased feedback on their bios and profiles and the ones that do often times get biased feedback or have context into your bio and photos that a stranger does not.
Friends, family members and co-workers may not want to be brutally honest with you or they might have some advantage that allows them more flexibility to get away with breaking guidelines for photos and bios. Apps like Hinge and Match allow users to more easily humble brag or add details about themselves through photos by allowing for captions. Prompts are great but can be limiting when compared to free-form bios so when possibly, take advantage of the opportunities to add details, prompts and opportunities for conversation starters through your photo captions.
Self-deprecating humor is great as it shows the ability to laugh at yourself and shows some creativity and possible good banter possibility. If you have a great story, reference or humble brag, see if you can share it using one of the prompts on these apps. These prompts are your best friend to help you set up an opportunity to talk about yourself without seeming as self-absorbed or randomly weird if referenced in a small bio.
Prompts are added regularly so check back. Check out these posts for good prompts to use on Hinge as well as Bumble. Finance exec who will never end up on MidtownUniform. Relocated from NYC to trade in summer Fridays to Long Island for weekend trips to Mendocino, Big Sur and Portland.
Former analytics geek turned designer. Catch hiking in Marin on weekends followed by oysters, cold beer and sun at Pelican Inn or Cafe Reyes. There is nothing worst than reading another cliche dating profile that is contains multiple entries from Tinder bingo i. wine, brunch, dogs, yoga, beach, travel, family is everything, no hook-ups, swipe left if, work at tech etc.
There is nothing wrong with those interests, hobbies but listing out those exact words is basic, lazy and cliche. If you want to attract a guy, put some effort into it, be creative and a little vulnerable. Being too cute will only attract shallow guys.
This sounds dismissive as well as signals to others that you are unable to filter out such people on your own and lack ability to screen profiles and read people. This could actually backfire and suggest you are an easy target or encourage someone to accept a challenge to bypass your filters. Avoid celebrity quotes and descriptions from friends. Describe yourself in your own words. Stop trying to pretend you are on dating apps against your own will. The guidance and tips I provide is geared toward those seeking to date with the intent of long-term relationships.
Take a look at my guide for Tinder bios and profiles here. Hinge is a dating app that is a bit different from others. There is no bio field about me section but there are ways to make your profile stand out beyond good photos and good answers to prompts. Hinge has location and caption fields for photos. Adding context can make all the difference in a profile.
That really depends on your lifestyle, location, and who you want to attract. Sure there are certain interests that attract more people but your focus should be on quality, not quantity. Similarly, hobbies and interests should reflect those that others would be interested in, not just what you geek out on. Too many solo, introverted interests and hobbies can be a turn-off.
No one is asking you to be someone else, but you do need to grow and add hobbies and interests that make you more marketable. The best profile a woman can make is to come off as effortless, while managing to convey lifestyle attributes and qualities she is connected to. If you focus on characteristics you risk sounding superficial, rigid, or overly picky. These are not attractive qualities! For example, rather than specifying the characteristic of "having a fit body," you should state the character trait of "active" or "valuing health and fitness.
The former excludes people who don't want someone who is overly concerned with appearances even if they themselves are fit , and the latter includes those fit people who care about more than the superficial. Remember - you have already started your profile by saying who you are and what you're into - if someone is still reading, they're already intrigued by you and what you care about.
If you really want to meet someone who loves sailing because sailing is your passion, that person who also loves sailing is already hooked as soon as they read that sailing is your passion! If they hate sailing, hate the water and hate sailors, they're already gone. When you are writing about who you are and how your live your life, be sure to show the reader what that looks like in action. You are trying to attract the right people to you, and to do that you need to be specific.
For example, many people say in their profiles they like to travel. Don't assume that the reader is going to know which of these you'd be into! Talk about your favorite travel destinations, your dream vacation or the best trip you ever took - the person who loves your kind of travel - or is intrigued by it - will take note! Rather than saying "I love to have fun" say "I love having fun - my ideal weekend includes bowling, a Netflix binge and a pancake brunch.
If one of your defining values is loyalty, show what that looks like in your life. When you are in love, are you your partner's biggest cheerleader? Have you stood by your beloved losing baseball team? Or your childhood best friends? Look to your life for actual examples! The added bonus of specificity is it gives people who want to reach out to you a "hook" to mention in a message to you.
It amazes me how many people use their precious profile real estate to talk about what they don't want or about their cynicism, bitterness or pessimism. Not only do you come across as negative, but you also give the impression that you are the very thing you claim not to want.
If you say "drama queens need not apply" I will assume that you have tons of relationship drama, which means you don't have the self-awareness to see how much of it you create! The better you are at attracting the right people, the more the wrong ones won't be attracted to you. Besides - you can't avoid being contacted online by some people you don't want to date - that's par for the course.
Your focus instead should be on being contacted by those you do want to date! It is more effective to focus on attracting the right people than repelling the wrong ones. Another common pitfall is sarcasm in the profile. You might be sarcastic, and that might be what people who know you love about you. But sarcasm doesn't translate well in an online profile, especially if you are a woman!
Women might be more forgiving, but very few men will be instantly drawn to a woman who leads with sarcasm. Your profile tells a story. It shouldn't be a novel consider this a bonus tip! It might tell the story of an athletic, ambitious world traveler, or a geeky, sincere introvert. Or it could tell the story of a bitter, demanding perfectionist. Review your profile, photos and text together and ask yourself:.
Your story is dictating who is attracted to you, so make sure you are grabbing the attention of the right people. If you aren't able to be objective about your profile, ask someone you trust to read it for you. Is it highlighting your best qualities? What are you saying between the lines? Is it what your ideal partner wants to hear? Are you expressing what is both unique to you and what is attractive to who you want to date?
If you can do that, you are winning! And you just might meet the perfect person for you online. Since we're talking about writing a profile, I have to mention spelling and grammar. There is a lot of bad spelling and grammar out there. And there are a lot of online profiles that list spelling mistakes and bad grammar as a pet peeve.
And some of those same people have spelling mistakes and bad grammar in their profiles! Plenty of people will be forgiving of typos, but don't risk turning off someone just because you didn't use spellcheck. The thoughtfulness and care you put into your profile will show and be appreciated by others. So make the effort to clean up your mistakes! Francesca is a professional dating coach and matchmaker. First, always keep the end goal in mind. The goal is to find the perfect person FOR YOU. You need to keep this in mind when writing your dating profile because it should be what shapes the way you answer questions and present yourself.
Secondly, remember that there is no such thing as the perfect online dating profile. There is, however, the perfect dating profile FOR YOU. Seeing the theme here? The whole goal is to find the right person for you. We are going to help you make the perfect profile FOR YOU that helps you accomplish that goal. Oh, and yes, they all come with free trials when you click the links 🙂.

This could be your header:. Using this as your headline accomplishes a few things. In addition to comedy, you can go the angle of determined or hardworking. If you are someone who is a hustler or really gets after life, this might be a great spot to showcase your determination and drive with a quote. These are all great traits to showcase. You can also go the romantic route if you want. In reality, you can use any quote you want in your headline.
Just make sure that you ask yourself what the quote is portraying and if that is the correct image you want to give off about yourself.
What this is showing is a simple and fool-proof formula to come up with a headline that will convert. By convert, we mean getting the right people to click through and read your profile. You start the headline off with who you are and then end with what you are looking for. You want to leave things a little mysterious. You want it to intrigue and get people to wonder more about you. The second part should also be left a little mysterious so that people reading it can interpret it how they want.
People have a big tendency to interpret things they read to be about themselves. Make sure that you are not selling yourself short in your headline. If you honestly have no redeeming qualities and are plain and boring, you may want to work on yourself a bit before you start dating online. The part of the dating profile writing that everyone dreads the most is the fact that you have to write about yourself.
Knowing how to describe yourself on a dating app is a tall task. Even professional writers who write thousands of words a day struggle when it comes to writing about themselves. Nothing that we say is going to make this easy, but we are going to help make it easier. Yea, we know. As long as they are supportive friends, you should be in good hands.
You are not writing your Wikipedia article. You are writing your online dating profile. Also, make sure to try and make things interesting with a bit of character in there. You can actually give these facts, but give something more exciting and personal with them. Notice how we said the same things but we took them a step further and included an interesting fact about ourselves. We see this one ALL THE TIME. People will write their dating profile and spend the whole time talking about how much they hate writing about themselves and how awkward it is.
WAYYYYYYY too many people talk about this on their profile, and it gets old to hear time and time again. Be different. Own the process. Be proud and write confidently and it will come across a lot better than you probably think that it does. Get something down on paper and loaded up and come back to it later.
Having ANYTHING up is better than a profile that has NOTHING up. Put up whatever you have now and then come back to it tomorrow and edit. Having a great username for your dating profile is a must. Even if you know how to write a great dating profile and have accomplished it , you could sink yourself with a bad username. Below are some tips for creating the perfect online dating username. Ladies, scram! This is for the boys.
REMEMBER, these are just examples, and you should not copy these word for word. Your dating profile should be about you and not the people that we took these examples from. I moved out here a few years ago because I knew you were here. Where to begin? Yes, I know.. My hobbies include music, concerts, and hanging out with my awesome friends. These are two examples of online dating profiles that we think are great. If you notice, they both follow the same formula that you can certainly copy.
It goes like this. The formula here is simple. Men, here is one rule, though. It will make you look shallow and scare off a lot of the women that might normally be interested. For fun, I love going to the lake and running. The absolute best advice we can give you here is, to be honest, and upfront about what you are looking for.
For some reason, women dating online have an issue with doing this. Speak positively about what you want and make sure not to be TOO forward about your long-term goals.
My ideal man is a strong-willed, Christian man who lives a faith-based life. I love to laugh and would love a man with a sense of humor.

These tips are applicable to About Me sections, headlines, short answers, and anything else you need to fill in on your dating profile. The goal?
